When Paul Wheatley, known to his cycling buddies as 'Weetabix', goes for a ride he usually ends up going around in circles - around Guernsey!
Understandably, every few years Paul feels the urge for a change of scenery and, together with a few friends, has previously riden from Gillingham in Dorset to Madrid (2005) and Montpellier to Rome (2009). With such a history of long-distance riding behind him, it will perhaps come as no surprise to hear that Paul will shortly be heading off again, this time to ride from St Malo to Geneva. What may be more surprising is that Paul will be just a couple of weeks short of his 66th birthday when he sets off on September 6th.
As with his Montpellier to Rome ride, Smile4Wessex will again be benefitting from the amazing efforts of this serial fundraiser. But it's not just his cycling that has raised funds for the charity as Paul has also been part of the team which organised the hugely successful Guernsey Golf Day & Dinner, from 2007-2012, and was recognised for his support in 2009 when he received our Fundraiser of the Year Award.
Describing the terrain of the 1,000km route as including "a couple of bumps along the way" (we'd know them better as the Alps), Paul and the three others joining him for the ride (plus his wife, Jacqui, who will be driving the support vehicle) expect to complete their journey in just 8 days.
