On 22nd May, 8 members of Team E Neuro, or the 'Neuro Alpinists' as they have become known, took on the Ultra Challenge 'Jurassic Coast Challenge', to raise funds for a specialist plasma exchange chair for the Day Case Unit within E-Neuro.
We were delighted to be asked to become involved in this project, after previously funding the purchase of the Spectra Optia Plasma Exchange Machine in 2019, and seeing the difference this service provides to patients.
The original plan was to fund the balance between the team's fundraising and the cost of the chair. However, following the challenge around the Dorset coastline, we were so impressed at how the Alpinists smashed their target, we have now agreed to fully fund a second chair for the unit, enabling two patients to receive treatment at the same time in the comfort of these specialist chairs.
Plasma Exchange is used to treat patients with chronic conditions, such as Myasthenia Gravis , Multiple Sclerosis, Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, Encephalitis and Optic Neuritis. In the 4 hour long invasive treatment, plasma is taken from the patient and exchanged with Human Albumin.
The team completed their challenge in an impressive 18.5 hours!
"Challenging was an understatement but it was a very rewarding experience. It really was tough, exhausting but truly amazing and memories to keep for a lifetime. It really did show what an amazing group of people we have here at UHS!"
Congratulations Team E Neuro on your incredible achievement
