On the 28th February 2022, Lee Serjent underwent surgery at the Wessex Neurological Centre for an arteriovenous malformation, which was discovered on a routine head MRI due to tinnitus.
A brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a tangle of blood vessels that connects arteries and veins in the brain.
Although daunted by the prospect of an operation on his brain, Lee elected to have surgery to eliminate the risks that came with leaving the AVM untreated. He underwent an 8 hour operation under the care of Consultant Neurosurgeon, Mr Diederik Bulters, who reasured Lee that the AVM had successfully been removed and would not return.
Now, a year on, Lee is fully recovered and back at work, and grateful for the wonderful care he received from all the specialist staff at the unit. Wishing to give something back, Lee will be shaving his head on the 25th February, for febBRAINairy, to support all those going through brain surgery and raise funds for Smile4Wessex.
