On July 13th/14th Andy Hues and friends Steve Elliott and Tom Yelf will be taking on The Three Peaks! It is a tough personal challenge to climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowden (the three highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales).
Andy tells us in his own words why he chose to take on this challenge to raise money for the Smile4Wessex Appeal:
'Approximately 12 to 15 months ago my wife Clare was complaining of feeling dizzy and that her sight was faltering in her right eye. This continued for a couple of weeks until one day she was shopping with a friend and she as good as took out a display in a shop in our local town. Something was not right.
Not wanting to cause a fuss she popped her nose into the opticians that she had recently attended to ask them if they could have a look at her eye just to see if they could see anything. The optician immediately advised her to visit QA Eye Emergency Clinic, of which she did. They carried out a couple of tests in relation to her symptoms and she was advised that they would like to carry out an MRI Scan.
In September of last year she was diagnosed as having Multiple Sclerosis. Everything in our world drew to an immediate halt!
Since that time Clare has received tremendous support from the local team of specialist nurses and began medication that will hopefully, in time, modify the disease to a manageable level.
I guess by me taking on the 3Peaks Challenge with a couple of friends that I have roped in, is my way of saying Thank You to everyone that has been involved in the diagnosis and treatment of Clare, and by completing this challenge I hope that I can do my bit in helping fund research into Neurological diseases or just try to help someone less fortunate than Clare.'
