Each year, more people are admitted to hospital with a head injury as the result of a fall than through road traffic accidents. In early January, when Ken Ferguson fell down a flight of just 5 steps, he became another victim of this perhaps surprising statistic.
Ken, who originally hails from Scotland but lives and works in Southampton, was admitted to the Wessex Neurological Centre where he underwent two life-saving operations and spent a total of five weeks, three of which were in Neuro Intensive Care, in the care of staff at the Centre before being transferred to Belfast to continue his recovery close to his mother and sister, who moved to Northern Ireland some years ago.
Six months on and Ken has returned to his home in Southampton, and though he still has some way to go to a regain full recovery from his injuries, his sister, Dora, has turned her attention to raising funds for Smile4Wessex, and the unit she credits with having saved his life. Dora will be joined on 19th July by two friends, Katy Hillary and Alexandra Woodford, for a 9-mile walk along the coastal path from Holywood to Bangor in County Down.
