This year, the Junior Jurassic Walks have been replaced by a new and exciting event for children, the Sarum Walks4Wessex. With a choice of the 5 mile 'Saxon' Walk, 2 mile 'Roman' Walk or the 'Little Crusaders' Walk, there's something to suit all ages, and plenty to keep them interested along the way.
5 mile Saxon Walk
Starting in the picturesque village of Netton, near Salisbury this five mile trek will take our young walkers through the beautiful Woodford Valley towards the Iron Age monument of Old Sarum Hill. The route follows the meandering River Avon as it threads its way south through the Little Durnford Estate, it is here where we pick up the next group of walkers, the Junior Roman Trekkers.
2 mile Roman Walk
Once the Saxons and Romans have linked up, our junior walkers embark on their trek through the Little Durnford Estate. It is here they have the opportunity to appreciate the 17th Century Manor house, home to John Pelham, the 9th Earl of Chichester, and to see the many unusual animals grazing within the Estate: Camels, alpacas, donkeys, and Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs.
At the end of the estate we follow the path which takes us towards our final destination of Old Sarum Hill. It is here where will join our Little Crusaders for a well-earned picnic lunch.
The Little Crusaders Walk
Overlooking modern-day Salisbury, our very young walkers take a circular route on one of the Iron Age banks of the original settlement of Old Sarum. On this walk, parents will be able to take in the spectacular views of New Sarum (Salisbury) and watch the various aircraft as they fly out of the nearby Old Sarum Airfield.
